Tender Detail : |
Background: The project “Green Innovation Centres for the Agriculture and Food Sector” (hereafter called as the project, Green Innovation Centre, or GIC project) is part of the special initiative “Transformation of Agricultural and Food Systems” (SI AGER) formerly called “ONE WORLD – No Hunger” (SEWOH) of Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The project aims to make a significant contribution to reducing poverty and hunger. The Global Programme (GP) "Green Innovation Centres in the Agricultural and Food Sector (GIC)" contributes to this goal by promoting innovations along agricultural value chains in selected rural regions. Identifying, communicating, and anchoring suitable innovations enables smallholder farms and owners of upstream and downstream micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSME) to increase their income, productivity, employment and economic and climate resilience. At the same time, the global project promotes regional food supply. The global programme supports Green Innovation Centres in 13 African countries, India and Vietnam.
An important cross-cutting topic of the GIC India is “Post-Harvest loss Management (PHL)” since 2022. The focus of the measures is on expanding successful climate-smart pilot initiatives for cold storage (apples and potatoes) and drying (tomatoes). The use of solar-powered technology plays a central role in this context. Farmers, government officials, and financial stakeholders are sensitized to the topic of "Mitigating post-harvest losses through the use of renewable technology-based solutions." Successful business models in cold storage technology are further developed and enhanced through an app-based "storage on demand" solution. Close collaboration with the Indian private sector ensures the sustainability of the measures. The demand for cold storage technology continues to surpass the supply in the project regions, thus offering high development potential.
Expected Results Potato farmers in Karnataka and Maharashtra benefit from high-quality seeds that enhance productivity. Additionally, the establishment of cold storage facilities will benefit 1000 farmers. In terms of the indicators outlined in the country package, the following impacts are expected: • The reduction of PHL along the promoted VCs leads to an increase in productivity and income for 4000 farmers. • Climate-smart (solar-powered) technologies for cold storage and drying are promoted and adopted by the trainees. • 500 additional employment opportunities have been created. • 5000 farmers have been trained on the advantages of the promoted technologies for minimizing PHL • Up to 1500 small-scale entrepreneurs have been trained. • Partnerships between private and finance sector and state institutions have been promoted.
